Human Services as an Economic Engine
This series of data visualizations shows how human services drive jobs and stimulate economic benefits through the Illinois economy. Providers of human services throughout generate $4.5 billion a year in spending – economic activity that generates some $597 million in state and local taxes. It is an industry full of small businesses, serving as an important job creator.
Economic Impact by Senate Districts
Human service programs create tens of millions of dollars of economic impact in individual legislative districts. Human service workers create over $75 million in economic impact in ten state Senate districts. Human service grants exceeded $25 million in eight state Senate districts in 2014. Six state Senate districts have more than 3,500 human service workers. Many of these districts are found in the Chicago suburbs and downstate. Click on a district for details.
