WHAT HAPPENS OUTSIDE OF SCHOOL IMPACTS HOW WELL KIDS DO IN SCHOOL
- Tutoring services
- Adequate food, shelter and clothing
- A place to go after school
- Positive role models
- Mental or physical health services
Everyone agrees that education is key to our collective future. Education prepares our workforce and strengthens families and communities. The economic opportunity available to a high school graduate is measurably and markedly different than an eighth-grade dropout.
Good teachers, strong curriculum and safe facilities are essential, of course. But human services is on the frontlines as well. We are of helping shape a child providing critical services to thousands of young people across Illinois.
“Most analyses of achievement gaps point to the fact that in-school factors, while important, account for no more than a third of the differential performance of students on tests. Out of school factors, including such things as family income, parental education level, and a multitude of health issues, appear to account for the rest.”
